Allow children to be happy in their own way, for what better way will they find?
Childhood is the most sensitive time which shapes our way of being as adults. So the experiences one has during childhood play a very important role in all areas of life, from their self image to how they see the world.
Happiness is not just about momentary pleasure or immediate gratification. In 21st century, with such advancements in technology, many children may find happiness in playing video games and interacting with friends on social media. As much as these things do provide comfort, there’s more that parents can do for their children to help them build a meaningful life. Here are some ways to do the same:
Encourage outdoor and indoor play
Children learn a lot through play. Encouraging them to play, both outdoors and indoors can work wonders for them, not just in helping them learn new things but also in building a lot of skills. Unstructured play can help children re enact everything and play it out in an environment controlled by them. This helps them build coping skills, social skills etc which further help in building confidence and happiness.
Have dinner together
Eating as a family together can make a lot of difference in child’s life. Having a ritual where everyone talks about their day and shares their feelings can help children feel supported and foster good relationship among family members. Having a ritual like praying together before eating or practicing gratitude can also help them appreciate life and find meaning and purpose.
Modelling
Children learn most through observation. So it’s important that parents have a positive approach towards life and build authentic relationship with them so that they learn from example. It’s always easier to overcome hardship if one has a positive attitude and faith in themselves.

Teach them to build relationships
Teaching children about being kind to others and building relationships can help them develop empathy. Small acts of kindness can add a lot to life and help children have social support system. Such acts can go a long way in making a child’s life meaningful and happy.
Validating child’s feelings
It’s important to help the child feel safe so that they can confide in their parents/family members. This helps them feel confident and supported. Talking to children in a positive manner can also help them feel safe and build a dash approach towards life.
However, the most important thought to keep in mind to raise a happy child is to help them be aware of their emotions. There are too many adults who aren’t in touch with their emotions and just getting on with their lives on autopilot mode. Only when one can identify their emotions will they be able to acknowledge and feel them to the fullest. They need to know that FEELING emotions is a strength. Happiness can only be felt if one is able to acknowledge and experience the whole spectrum of emotions.
In the words of Albus Dumbledore, “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light”.
