In ancient times when medical practitioners didn't have much knowledge of the mechanism that leads to various diseases. They believed that some ailments could be found from imbalances in the stomach. This was called hypochondriasis or Leaky gut.
However, this theory was rejected as science grew with time, for example, we now can examine bacteria, parasites & viruses under a microscope. Now, doctors use the word 'hypochondriac' to represent a person who is having an unexplainable fear of having a medical illness.
But what if this theory arose in the past exists? So, let's discuss the 'Leaky Gut' which is getting a lot of attention on blogs and social media.
What is Leaky Gut?
A state of hyperpermeability of the gut is known as Leaky Gut. This allows toxins in the gut to pass through your intestines into your body causing many health problems.
Some of the most common ones are:
• Inflammatory bowel disease
• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Food allergies
• Chronic fatigue
• hepatitis, Pancreatitis
• Arthritis, Diarrhea
• Diabetes, etc.
What Causes Leaky Gut?
Many things can lead to inefficient Leaky Gut conditions. These include
Poor diet, Gluten, alcohol intake, antibiotics, stress, and lifestyle.
The job of the gut is to digest all that we eat, break it down and thus provide nutrition to our body. A normal healthy gut does not allow toxins and waste products to enter our bloodstream. This makes it very essential for all of us to keep our Gut in healthy condition for a healthy life.
Low fiber diets rich in sugar and fat, contributes to an unhealthy gut by hurting the healthy microbiome. Thus, a disturbed microbiome with an increase in the population of bad bacteria and low numbers of good bacteria damages the lining of the gut.
The gut finds it difficult to digest the food without the aid of good bacteria and also more toxins are accumulated in the process.
This leads to hyperpermeability of the intestines known as Leaky Gut, which allows toxins to enter our bloodstream. Leaked toxins and undigested food particles in the bloodstream through the leaky gut cause production of antibodies through a heightened immune response of the body causing several diseases.
Tests conducted to identify ‘Leaky Gut’
Leaky Gut can be diagnosed by Lactulose/mannitol test, the test is conducted after drinking a sugary solution if the urine sample shows both lactulose and mannitol, then that indicates a leaky gut.
Stool test for microbiome and Food Sensitivity Tests are other tests to know the health of Gut.
How do we prevent and cure a leaky gut?
A balanced microbiome of good and bad bacteria in the gut is very necessary for a Healthy Gut.
To keep the Microbiome in a balanced state is an effortful task for our intestine.
As already highlighted the condition of the Leaky Gut depends a lot on the composition of bacteria inside the gut.
We need to take a diet and live a lifestyle that keeps the Good bacteria in sufficient numbers and the bad bacteria and the toxins to the minimum. So, to correct the leaky gut, we need to do a little more than eat healthily.
We need to replace the bad bacteria by reseeding the good bacteria by eating foods that are rich in healthy bacteria known as probiotics. Foods like lassi, fermented vegetables such as kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, etc. we also include anti-inflammatory foods like avocado and walnut in our diet to heal the leaky gut.
Along with eating foods that help in healing the leaky gut we need to avoid foods that cause inflammation. That is, we need to do away with foods to which our gut has become sensitive. We also avoid processed foods and refined sugar.
So, in nutshell to repair a Leaky Gut we eat anti-inflammatory foods rich in probiotics and avoid foods to which we are sensitive and foods that cause inflammation like processed foods rich in refined sugar.
Regular exercise, sleeping well, and doing relaxing exercises to combat stress is a sure and certain means of having a healthy gut and so Healthy Life.
