Keeping your mental health in check during COVID
Covid-19 has been the biggest shock for most of humanity, it has altered our routines, and the notion of “new normal†has come up. There is a close link between our mental and physical health, both influencing each other to a great extent. With so many things changing around us, it can often be overwhelming and stressful, and this time is ever so important to focus on our mental health, in addition to our physical health. Here are some ways through which you can keep your mind in check are: Â
- - Recognizing your thoughts and emotions: The first step to address your mental health is to acknowledge what you are feeling. There is no “right way†an individual should feel. Whatever emotions and thoughts you are experiencing are valid. Identifying these emotions can allow us to cope with them effectively rather than letting them be there at the back of our minds.
- - Taking time out: With so much information, being available about the virus and hearing the details and statistics can be very stressful and scary. Try to gather the information that is valid and from authentic sources only while avoiding unnecessary information. It is okay to take a break from knowing what is happening around us to look inwards and focus on our mental health.
- - Do what makes you happy: Everyone has something which they enjoy doing. Allow yourself to engross in any such activity which takes your mind off and makes you happy, it could be reading a book, watching a movie or simply being with yourself.
- - Set a routine: With so much uncertainty around, setting a routine can help you feel more relaxed and in control of things around you. This doesn’t have to be a strict time-bound thing, but could vaguely include the things you do throughout the day, tasks to accomplish, and plan as you wish.
- - Stay in touch: Reach out to family and friends. No one is alone during this pandemic and connecting with our loved ones can make us feel loved and having a support system. The feeling of togetherness is very strong and contributes greatly to our mental health.
- - Seeking help: Whenever you feel things are getting heavy and difficult, don’t be shy from seeking professional help to take care of your mental health and well-being.
These challenges are unique to human existence and are putting all of humanity to the test. Together we can and we will overcome this, remember you are not alone. During this time, ensure not to lose hope and search for the light and take care of your mental health.
“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.â€
